What Is Internet TV?
Internet TV (also referred to as Web-enabled, OTT [over-the-top], and broadband TV) is a way to access and view Internet content on a television set. Reasons for using Internet TV might include the availability of additional video content, ease of access, and in most cases free content void of commercials.
Overview
Recently, content owners have been testing other platforms outside the broadcast airwaves to deliver their media. Many have found success in providing access to content through set-top boxes, gaming consoles, and Web-connected TVs. Devices like Roku, Google TV, Xbox 360, and Boxee give people access to VOD (video-on-demand) content for playback directly to their home TV sets.
These devices and connected televisions offer a diverse selection of content as well as movies and TV series associated with large networks. Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon are three major content providers found on most devices. YouTube has also provided an application for many connected devices and TVs.
When choosing a device, take into consideration your viewing habits and what you and your family enjoy watching. Each device comes with different features and available content and range in price from U.S. $50 to $300. You can check out many of these devices at a local electronics store.
The Church and Internet TV
The Church has a keen interest in broadband TV and its potential for making Church-related media available for access and playback in the home. For the Church, Internet TV allows people around the world to access Church content in homes and meetinghouses. With a Web-connected device or television, members can access and play all the media the Church creates. Possible uses might include family home evening, seminary and institute, Church Sunday classes, and leadership training.
To date, devices like the Roku Box and Apple TV can be used to access and play Church-related media on your home television. Available content includes live broadcasts, Mormon Messages, general conferences, CES devotionals, “I’m a Mormon” ads, youth media, and the LDS radio series.
The Church is actively involved in investigating and preparing channels and applications for many of these devices to benefit members worldwide. Check back occasionally to view what devices have been made compatible for Mormon Channel playback and related media. See the attached list for supported devices and other devices being prepared or evaluated.
