Before the Games were awarded to Salt Lake City
The Church took a neutral position on whether the Olympic Games should come to Salt Lake City, recognizing that the issue was one for Utahns to decide.
During the bid process, the Salt Lake Olympic Bid Committee sought corporate donations from
many businesses throughout Salt Lake City and elsewhere to support the Olympic effort. In
response to these requests, some Church-affiliated businesses contributed a total of $210,938 in
the 11 years between 1985 and 1995. The funds were given in the spirit of good corporate
citizenship from the profits of these businesses, which regularly contribute to various charitable
and community causes.
