How We Supported the Games

Before the Games were awarded to Salt Lake City

The Church took a neutral position on whether the Olympic Games should come to Salt Lake City, recognizing that the issue was one for Utahns to decide.

During the bid process, the Salt Lake Olympic Bid Committee sought corporate donations from many businesses throughout Salt Lake City and elsewhere to support the Olympic effort. In response to these requests, some Church-affiliated businesses contributed a total of $210,938 in the 11 years between 1985 and 1995. The funds were given in the spirit of good corporate citizenship from the profits of these businesses, which regularly contribute to various charitable and community causes.

After the Games were awarded

Church President Gordon B. Hinckley said that the Church would play its part in the community by being "good hosts." Since then, the Church has responded positively to a number of specific requests for support from the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. These included:

  • A letter to Church members that pointed out the need for thousands of Olympic volunteers and indicated the Church's desire to see the 2002 Winter Games successful.

  • The loan of a prime downtown block of real estate to be used as the Medals Plaza for the nightly Olympic award ceremonies, and contributions toward its development. The donation saved the Salt Lake Organizing Committee about $5 million.

  • Permission to use two 80-acre parcels of land in Park City owned by Church-affiliated entities for venue park-and-ride facilities. The sites will be restored to their original condition following the Games.

  • An arrangement with the Utah Department of Transportation that provided 16 acres of land owned by the Church for a road easement that enabled access to the Winter Sports Park in Park City.

  • As part of the official cultural program, four performances from the Tabernacle Choir, that included internationally renowned artists and the Orchestra on Temple Square. In addition, the choir performed concerts free to the public following its traditional weekly broadcasts of "Music and the Spoken Word" from the Tabernacle.

  • Volunteers from Brigham Young University. Faculty members were asked to allow students who volunteered for the Olympics to make up classes missed during the first week of the games. Plus, classes were canceled during the second week of the Olympics to allow both faculty and students to volunteer. More than 4,000 students did so.
