Tour 3: Tracing Your Family Roots

Salt Lake City is the world capital for those wanting to trace their family roots. Just west of Temple Square in the Family History Library rests the largest collection of genealogical records in the world. The library's extensive holdings reflect the Church's deep commitment to the sacred belief that families can live together forever. Access to the collection's two billion names, which have been gathered from many nations and religions, is free to anyone. The European, British, and international sections are often of special interest to journalists visiting from overseas.

This tour includes:

  • A visit to the Family History Library, the world's largest center for genealogical research. Here you can talk to people researching facts about their families or talk to experts in the field, who may even be able to help you with your own family lines.

  • A look at the FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service, an enormously popular web site for genealogical research, launched in 1999. The relatively recent development of computer technology and digitized records has revolutionized genealogy. Experts are available to explain and demonstrate the program that was born in Salt Lake City and receives millions of hits each day.

  • Interviews with experts on family history topics. To many, the Family History Library is more than a place for pursuing a religious belief or a fascinating hobby. In recent years an increasing number of medical and genetic researchers have been using the library to hunt for clues that could lead to cures for inherited diseases.
