Tour 4: Helping People Help Themselves

One of the better-known characteristics of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a belief in self-reliance and independence. In the Depression of the 1930s, this concept found expression through a remarkable approach to welfare assistance. That approach continues today, with the belief that providing work opportunities for those in need is better than a handout.

This tour includes:

  • A briefing and overview from people who operate the Church's welfare program.

  • A visit to a supermarket without cash registers, where those who need assistance shop with a bishop's order for what they need.

  • A look at the Humanitarian Center, which ships hundreds of tons of food, clothing, medical equipment, and educational materials to millions of needy people worldwide, from villages ravaged by natural disasters to nations recovering from armed conflicts.

  • A visit to Deseret Industries, a Church-owned, nonprofit business that offers jobs to the unemployed, helping them become financially independent. You may also choose to visit the organization's factories and shopping outlets.

  • A look at a remarkable experiment in inner-city welfare. In 1998 the Church extended its welfare assistance to Salt Lake's inner city by training volunteer case workers to help families in need, including those of other faiths. This modification to the Church's long-standing welfare program relies on hundreds of specialist volunteers--dentists, doctors, mechanics, and others--who help the less fortunate in remarkable ways.
