Tour 2: Reaching Out to the World

Paradoxically, for a religion that sought refuge from persecution and a place to worship in peace and seclusion, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pursued a worldwide outreach program from its inception. Before the Church was 10 years old, missionaries were in Europe. Today, missionaries wearing white shirts and black name tags are a familiar sight on the streets of every major city in the world. This force of 60,000 includes young men, young women, and retired couples.

This tour includes:

  • A briefing by an expert on the concept behind a worldwide missionary program that has taken the Church to 160 nations and that brings more than 300,000 people into the fold each year.

  • The video Called to Serve, which depicts how a missionary first learns where he or she will serve. These missionaries are volunteers who agree to serve anywhere in the world and are willing to learn English, Russian, Chinese, or any of 58 other languages. You may have seen them around your town, riding bicycles or proselytizing door to door.

  • Interviews with missionaries who have come from around the world to serve as tour guides on Temple Square. They are available to talk with you in English or their native language about their work here and what it means to them.

  • Introductions to missionaries who have just finished training and are preparing to leave for the country where you live.
