How
to Set Up and Secure a New Dell 740 Computer
(For a Dell 740 computer when you do not have access to an external USB CD
or DVD drive)
It
is essential that these steps are followed in order.
If the unit is currently using MLS, be sure you have a current backup of that
unit’s MLS before you begin.
1. Download
the Local Unit Security Software and Additional Local Unit Software
Using
a computer with internet access, go to http://mls.lds.org/.
- Enter the following unit ID and password:
- Unit ID: <your unit number>
- Password: mymls
- Select the option to download the current version of MLS.
- Follow the instructions provided to download the
update file and save it to a removable storage device.
- Click the link for Local Unit Security Software.
- Select the option Click here to download the
Local Unit Security Suite Installer.
- Save the file to the removable storage device.
- Select the option to Click here to download the
Symantec Antivirus Definition Update.
- Save the file to the removable storage device.
- Click the link for Additional Local Unit Software
to download and save the additional software to the removable storage device.
Note:
Because you are not re-imaging the computer with the Local Unit Desktop version
5.5 you do not need to download the Dell 740 drivers.
2. Windows
XP Setup
To
set up your new computer, proceed with the Windows XP setup:
- On the Personalize Your Software screen, enter the
following:
- For the name, enter Clerk.
- For the organization, enter LDS Church.
- On the Computer Name and Administrator Password
screen, enter the following:
- For the Computer Name, enter LU-XXXXX, where
XXXXX is your unit number without the leading zeros.
- For the Administrator Password, enter localunit.
3. Complete
Setup
Follow
the rest of the steps to complete the setup. Afterwards, the computer will
automatically shut down and reboot. After the computer reboots, use the following
steps to set up your computer:
- On the Help Protect Your PC screen, select Not
Right Now for Automatic Updates.
- On the Who Will Use This Computer? Screen, enter
CLERK for your name, and then click Next.
- On the Start menu:
- Click Control Panel and select User Accounts.
- Click the account for CLERK and select Create
a Password.
- Set the password to localclerk.
- Click Create Password. (You may enter a
hint if you wish.)
- When asked if you want to make your files and folders
private, click Yes, Make Private.
- Close the Control Panel

Prepare computer to transmit successfully
If
you are using a dial-up connection through a modem, check for and Remove Digital:
Line Detect
- Go to the Start menu and click on Startup.
- See if there is a program called Digital Line
Detect.
- If so, go to the Control Panel and click on Add
or Remove Programs.
- Find Digital Line Detect in the list and
select Change/Remove.
- On the InstallShield Wizard, click the radio button
for Remove and click Next.
- Click OK to confirm the uninstall process.
- If a popup for ReadOnly File Detected appears,
click Yes.
- Close the Add or Remove Programs window and the
Control Panel.
If you are using a network connection through a standard CCN configuration:
- Connect the Ethernet cable to or insert the wireless
card in the computer.
- Install the CCN software obtained with the original
installation of the network connection for the old computer.
5. Install
MLS
- Insert the removable storage device containing the
MLS software.
- Go to My Computer and select the appropriate
removable storage device.
- Double click on the MLS installer.
- Install MLS. The installer password is moroni6.4.

Set Up MLS and Transmit
- Open MLS but do not log in.
- Minimize the MLS window.
- There is a Windows Security Alert screen stating
that Windows is blocking Java. Click Unblock.
- Restore the MLS window.
- Enter the setup information for the unit (the Dialer
Number is available in MLS System Options System tab on the old computer
for units already using MLS).
- If the computer is for a new unit, you need only
to enter the unit information and then transmit (Send/Receive Changes).
- If the computer is for a unit already using MLS,
you must enter the setup information for the unit and then on the single
panel screen click Restore from a File.
- Restore the unit’s backup.
- Transmit (Send/Receive Changes).
Note:
If you receive a security failure when using Send/Receive Changes, contact
Local Unit Support during business hours to request a security reset.
7.
Install the Local Unit Security Software
- Insert the removable storage device containing the
security software.
- Go to My Computer and select the appropriate
removable storage device.
- Double click on Install Local Unit Security Suite.
- Select the language when asked, and then click OK.
- On the Local Unit Security Suite Wizard, click Install.
- Symantec© will be extracted and installed first.
At completion, click Close.
- The Agent Configuration Utility will then run,
installing LANDesk©.
- The Symantec Packager will then install.
- When the process is complete, click Reboot Now
or wait for the computer to shut down and reboot.
8.
Install Symantec Updates
- Insert the removable storage device containing the
security software.
- Go to My Computer and select the appropriate
removable storage device.
- Double click on the X86 file containing the updates
(i.e. 20070612-009-x86).
- The Symantec Response Intelligent Updater box will
appear. Click Yes.
- After completion, click Yes.
- If the Dell Support Agreement pops up, read the
document and click Agree.
9.
Verify MLS Transmission
Open
MLS and transmit (Send/Receive Changes).
10. Additional
Software
Install
the additional software applications you downloaded in step 1.
