General Joseph Smith Addressing the Nauvoo Legion General Joseph Smith Addressing the Nauvoo Legion

Robert Campbell (1810–1890)
Watercolor and ink on paper, 1845

On June 18, 1844, as violent opposition to the Church and Joseph Smith flared, Joseph called for martial law to prepare for an invasion and gave his last public address to the Nauvoo Legion.

Robert Campbell, an English immigrant, sketched this scene on site. This is one of the earliest paintings of an historical event by a Latter–day Saint artist. It was used as the preliminary plan for an enlarged oil–on–canvas mural shown in Nauvoo with a companion piece about Joseph Smith’s murder at Carthage Jail.
