SALT LAKE CITY — The third official component of The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' online presence was announced
today. The new Web site, found at www.mormon.org, will be a resource for
those looking for information on the teachings and doctrine of the Church.
"Mormon.org is a convenient, nonthreatening way
for people to learn about the Church. They can explore on an individual basis
with complete anonymity," said Elder Neil L. Andersen, a member of the
First Quorum of the Seventy. "We hope the site will also encourage people
to talk to Church members in their areas about what they have learned."
The focus of the site is different than the Church's existing
Web pages, found at www.lds.org and
familysearch.org. It is geared
toward people who may be less familiar with the Church. Through a combination of
audio, visual and textual elements, the site explains basic principles of the
Church in simple, straightforward terms.
The site, which has been under construction since January,
allows visitors to explore Church doctrine at their own pace and on their own
time. Content is divided into four topics: The Church, Families, the Nature of
God, and the Purpose of Life.
Other components of the page include responses to frequently
asked questions regarding social issues, theology and Church policy; resources
on parenting, family relationships and communication; a meetinghouse locator to
help individuals find chapels in all areas of the United States and Canada; and
a search and glossary tool to help users understand gospel terms.
"I hope people will see Mormon.org as an
introductory source of information about the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and
a way to gain an improved understanding of our faith," Elder Andersen said.
