SALT LAKE CITY — President Gordon B. Hinckley, world leader of the 11.4
million members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, met briefly
today with United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. President Thomas S.
Monson and President James E. Faust, counselors in the First Presidency, also
participated in the meeting.
Secretary-General Annan and President Hinckley discussed the Church's ongoing
humanitarian aid efforts in a number of troubled areas in the world and how the
Church and the United Nations might cooperate further to relieve human suffering.
President Hinckley described the secretary-general as a "good, wonderful
leader" and commended the "tremendous work he's doing in trying to
bring peace and goodness to the people of the world."
Secretary-General Annan expressed appreciation for the meeting and for the
Church's humanitarian service, saying, "I've enjoyed the exchange we've had
and the work you do around the world."
