Genealogy Web Site Publishes Civil War Records, Adds Web 2.0 Enhancements - News Release

FamilySearch, a genealogy Web site maintained by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, announced yesterday its agreement with Footnote.com to publish two Civil War-era databases online — the 1860 U.S. Census and the Civil War Pensions Index. The two collections will provide free online access to millions of names of individuals from 1860 to 1865 in the United States. Full Story

Mormons and Baptists Clean Up Houston Neighborhood - News Release

Over 200 Mormon teens and youth leaders worked with their Baptist neighbors recently to clean up a downtown neighborhood. After an early morning gathering at the Sunny Side Missionary Baptist Church to get acquainted and receive assignments, volunteers rolled up their sleeves to spend the day beautifying Sunnyside. Mormon Grandmother Helps Australian Prime Minister Say “Sorry” - News Release

As Prime Minister Kevin Rudd gave a historic apology to indigenous Australians earlier this year, Latter-day Saint woman Lorna Fejo watched the televised speech with great interest. In what has been called the “sorry speech,” Mr. Rudd apologized to individuals affected by earlier governments’ policies that led to Aboriginal children being forcibly removed from their families. Clarifying Polygamy Confusion


The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reiterates that it has no affiliation whatsoever with any polygamous groups, including the polygamous sect in Eldorado, Texas. The Church discontinued polygamy officially in 1890, but more than a century later some news and Internet reports fail to draw clear distinctions between the Church and practicing polygamous sects.
