Call to Action, January 2011
In the most recent general Relief Society meeting, Sister Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president, taught: “We study our history because it helps us change. . . . It helps us know who we are and what we are to do, and it unites us in strengthening the homes of Zion and building the kingdom of God on the earth” (Nov. 2010 Liahona or Ensign, 115).
There are many types of history: Church history, family history, world history, personal history. What have you learned or what changes have you experienced from your study of these history sources? Share your experiences with us at reliefsociety@ldschurch.org.
For help in fulfilling your calling, we invite you to visit the newly designed Serving in the Church section of the new LDS.org.
Study the messages from general conference specifically for parents. For example, in the opening session of conference, President Monson’s call for more missionaries included counsel for our children that we can act upon. We can:
- "[Teach them how to be] clean and pure and worthy to represent the Lord.
- [Teach them how to] maintain [their] health and strength.
- [Teach them how to] study the scriptures.
- Where such is available, [help them] participate in seminary or institute.
- Familiarize [them] with the missionary handbook Preach My Gospel."
Read, watch, or listen to President Monson’s full conference address.
In the general Relief Society meeting on September 25, 2010, Sister Julie B. Beck taught, “Studying and applying the history of Relief Society gives definition and expression to who we are as disciples and followers of our Savior, Jesus Christ.” She announced that a history of Relief Society will be published in 2011.
An exact date has not been determined for the release of this history. In the meantime, updates and additional information will be available on the Relief Society site of LDS.org and on the visiting teaching message page of the Liahona and Ensign, where you will find excerpts from the history of Relief Society. For application ideas, go to our history page.
Family history has always been a part of Relief Society. In order to help the work move forward, the Relief Society general presidency encourages every Relief Society leader to be registered on FamilySearch before the end of the year. Registration is quick and gives you everything you need to do to get started. There are also suggestions for meetings on the Weekday Relief Society Meetings page to teach, inspire and organize sisters to accomplish family history work.
