Helps for Teachers

One of the responsibilities of the Sunday School is to assist all teachers in the Church and to improve the quality of gospel instruction. This Helps for Teachers feature is intended to assist gospel teachers, parents, priesthood quorum teachers, and teachers in the various auxiliary organizations of the Church in improving the quality of teaching throughout the world.

As President Boyd K. Packer has explained, we are all teachers: "The prophet is a teacher; his counselors are teachers; the General Authorities are teachers. Stake presidents and mission presidents are teachers; high councilors and quorum presidents are teachers; bishops are teachers; and so through all of the organizations of the Church. The Church moves forward sustained by the power of the teaching that is accomplished" (Teach Ye Diligently, rev. ed. [1991], 3–4; paragraph divisions altered).

Listed under Learn More below are a variety of materials, or Helps, designed to help gospel teachers. The materials may be a scripture applicable to teachers, a quotation from a living or ancient prophet, a story or brief example concerning a gospel principle, or suggestions or ideas on how lessons might be presented or strengthened. The Helps can assist gospel teachers to liken the scriptures and the teachings of latter-day and ancient prophets to our time. Leaders who assist and supervise teachers will also find the material helpful by suggesting ways they can support gospel teachers.

The goal of the Sunday School in presenting this material is to help, inspire, and motivate gospel teachers throughout the Church to improve the quality of teaching in classrooms and at home. We hope gospel teachers will more earnestly ponder and pray about ways they can prepare themselves to teach by the Spirit, thereby improving gospel teaching in the Church.

—The Sunday School General Presidency
