“I KNOW THE SCRIPTURES ARE TRUE”
Objective: Primary leaders can help children know, love, and use the scriptures to direct their lives.
I know. Primary leaders must have their own testimony that the scriptures are true and valuable.
Scripture study invites the Spirit.
- Elaine S. Dalton, “Believe!” Ensign, May 2004, 110
- “Preparation is a prerequisite to teaching by the Spirit” (Dallin H. Oaks, quoted in Teaching, No Greater Call, 96)
Scripture references are an important part of Primary resources.
- Friend, Outline for Sharing Time and the Children’s Sacrament Meeting Presentation, Faith in God guidebooks, Gospel Art Picture Kit (GAK), Children’s Songbook (CS), Primary manuals
I receive blessings as I search, ponder, and pray.
- "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105)
I know the scriptures. Primary leaders can help children know and love the scriptures.
We can teach the scriptures in the nursery and to the youngest children in Primary using the following resources:
- “My Story of Jesus,” Friend, Mar. 1999, 18; and Apr. 1999, 28
- Thomas S. Monson, “Dedication Day,” Ensign, Nov. 2000, 65
- “Randy’s Turn,” Friend, Nov. 2004, 32
- “Joseph Smith Finger Scenes,” Friend, July 2001, 32
- Daniel in the Lions’ Den, GAK 117
- Children’s Songbook, topical index, 306
- To memorize Exodus 20:8, use the finger play in Primary 1, page 45
We can inspire and challenge older children as they learn the scriptures using the following resources:
- Sing-a-story of the Restoration with scriptures (Joseph Smith—History 1:68, 70, 73–74)
- Pictures (GAK 407, 416; Joseph baptizing Oliver, in “Joseph Smith Finger Scenes,” Friend, July 2001, 33)
- Songs (“Father Up Above,” CS, 23; “When Jesus Christ Was Baptized,” CS, 102, verse 2; “The Holy Ghost,” CS, 105; “Search, Ponder, and Pray,” CS, 109)
- “Baptism,” CS, 100; GAK 208
- Use GAK 406, scriptures, and GAK 401 to memorize D&C 35:17
I know the scriptures are true. Children can gain a testimony that the scriptures are true.
Teachers can help children gain a testimony.
- “A teacher’s goal is greater than just delivering a lecture about truth. It is to invite the Spirit and use techniques that will enhance the possibility that the learner will discover the truth [and] be motivated to apply it” (Virginia H. Pearce, quoted in Teaching, No Greater Call, 61).
- “This is the crowning seal placed on gospel teaching—the personal witness of the teacher that the doctrine he has taught is true!” (Bruce R. McConkie, “The Teacher’s Divine Commission,” Ensign, Apr. 1979, 24; quoted in Teaching, No Greater Call, 10).
Children will be blessed as they are able to say, “I know the scriptures are true.”
