Young women may be called to serve in class presidencies, where they can learn leadership skills and qualities.
A call to serve in a class presidency will most likely be a girl's first calling in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She has been given the responsibility to help the bishop by caring for each class member (see "Young Women," section 4 of the Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2: Priesthood and Auxiliary Leaders [1998], 218).
How Many Class Presidencies Are Needed in a Ward or Branch?
- One class presidency may be called to serve all the young women in a ward or branch.
- Or a class presidency may be called for each age-group, if the young women are divided into groups according to age.
- Note: Class presidencies do not replace adult leaders who are called to supervise the Young Women program.
How Many Young Women Serve in a Class Presidency?
- If the group of young women is large enough, a president, first counselor, second counselor, and secretary may be called.
- If there are few young women, one or two girls may form a class presidency.
How Is a Class Presidency Called?
- The bishopric selects class presidents prayerfully.
- The Young Women presidency may recommend exemplary young women to serve as class president.
- The bishopric seeks permission from a young woman's parents before extending a calling.
- Each class president may recommend other young women to serve as counselors and secretary.
- A member of the bishopric will:
- Approve the choice of which young women will be called.
- Call the young women to serve in the presidency.
- Present them to the class to be sustained.
- Set them apart.
