The First Presidency has said, "Inspirational music is an essential part of our church meetings. The hymns invite the Spirit of the Lord, create a feeling of reverence, unify us as members, and provide a way for us to offer praises to the Lord" (First Presidency preface to Hymns, page ix).
When used appropriately with young women, music can:
- Invite the Spirit.
- Enhance lessons.
- Teach a gospel principle.
- Provide insight into scripture.
- Help young women build and express testimony.
"Some of the greatest sermons are preached by the singing of hymns. Hymns move us to repentance and good works, build testimony and faith, comfort the weary, console the mourning, and inspire us to endure to the end" (First Presidency preface to Hymns, page ix).
The information provided under Learn More below can help you use music to teach young women. For more information, see "Young Women," section 4 of the Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2: Priesthood and Auxiliary Leaders (1998), 221–23, and the Church Music Web site.
