Major Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the priesthood adviser, direct and coordinate the day-to-day work of public affairs council members.
  • Meet regularly, one-on-one, with the priesthood adviser to discuss:
    • Local priesthood objectives that may be achieved through building relationships with selected opinion leaders.
    • Priesthood leaders' knowledge of local issues faced by the Church that could help or hinder the mission of the Church and could be addressed through relationships with selected opinion leaders.
    • The progress and needs of the public affairs council.
    • The status of the public affairs council's annual project plan, assessing whether it is consistent with the Public Affairs Core Purpose.
  • Ensure that the work of the public affairs council and its annual project plan are consistent with the Public Affairs Core Purpose.
  • Organize and conduct (with approval of the priesthood adviser) regular public affairs council meetings to plan and implement the work of public affairs.
    • Implement the Three-Step Process for Building Relationships with Opinion Leaders.
    • Help develop and implement the council’s road maps—each road map representing the action plan or contact plan for reaching a specific opinion leader.
    • In meetings and other interactions with opinion leaders, make every effort to build the relationship between the opinion leader and priesthood adviser.
    • Direct follow-up and subsequent interactions with opinion leaders to ensure development of an ongoing, vibrant relationship.
    • Ensure that a record of interaction with opinion leaders is maintained by the public affairs council.
    • Prepare and accompany designated spokespersons (priesthood adviser, other priesthood leader, or designated Church members) to media interviews and news briefings, or delegate to the council’s media relations assistant.
    • Conduct post-activity evaluations.
    • Coordinate efforts with other public affairs councils in the area to ensure that contacts with the media and other opinion leaders are not duplicated.
    • Visit the Church Newsroom for News Media regularly to stay abreast of current Church activities and statements.

Accountability

  • Report to the public affairs council priesthood adviser.
  • Submit annual plans and budget requests to the priesthood adviser for approval.
  • Submit reports and information as requested by the priesthood adviser.

Training and Support

  • Receive training and support from the priesthood adviser and through this Web site.
  • Provide training as directed by the priesthood adviser.
