Step 3: Which Stories to Write


Not all of the stories that can be written should be written. In determining which stories to present to the media, the DPA should be guided by:

Whenever possible, each potential story should accomplish a primary objective of the public affairs program.

Attention to the following questions will help you determine if the subject is newsworthy from the media's viewpoint. You should be able to answer yes to one or more of the following questions:

Yes
No
 
Does it tie into your public affairs annual plan or strategic purpose?
Is it unusual to the public?
Can it compete for print space or broadcast time with many other items?
Is it current—an approaching event or something that just happened?
Does it have local interest that makes it relevant to the audience?
Was the event the first, the biggest, the best, the longest? (Media representatives like superlatives.)
