Jana Staples was born in Arizona to H. Burke and Brookie Peterson. She is the fourth of five daughters. After moving to Utah, she attended Brigham Young University, where she met Mark Staples. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple and are now the parents of three daughters and two sons. They have four grandchildren.

Sister Staples has had many sweet experiences serving in the Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society auxiliaries of the Church.
