Temporal welfare includes caring for the poor and needy and becoming self-reliant. The Lord has commanded that we "must visit the poor and the needy and administer to their relief" (D&C 44:6). He has also commanded that we use the blessings we have been given—our talents, abilities, and material goods—to become self-reliant individually and as families.
Welfare is central to the work of the high priests group and the elders quorum. In meetings of the high priests group leadership and the elder’s quorum presidency, leaders should plan ways to
- Teach principles of self-reliance.
- Discuss service opportunities to address welfare needs.
- Help members become self-reliant and find solutions to short-term and long-term welfare concerns.
