At April 2001 general conference, President Gordon B. Hinckley announced
a "bold initiative" to help youth in developing areas "step
out of the cycle of poverty." He spoke of returned missionaries and
other ambitious young men and women who have great capacity but meager
opportunities:
"I believe the Lord does not wish to see His people condemned
to live in poverty. I believe He would have the faithful enjoy the good
things of the earth. . . . "In an effort to remedy this [lack of opportunity],
we propose a plan . . . which we believe is inspired by the Lord. . . . We shall call
it the Perpetual Education Fund."
President Hinckley further declared, "Education is the key to opportunity"
(Ensign, May 2001, 53).
The Perpetual Education Fund offers loans to help you get a better education
so you can get a better job and better serve your family, the Church,
and your community.
But it is more than just a loan. It involves a process that helps you
to dreamto see your potential and the resources around you. It will
teach you to planto choose a great career, select an appropriate
education, find work, and organize your finances. Thus, with guidance
from Heavenly Father and support from your family and your leaders, you
will be able to achieve your dreams.
Now it is up to you. Do you dare to dream? It will take a lot of work,
and there will be challenges. But you can do it! Talk with your bishop
or branch president and your institute director. Visit the Church Employment
Resource Services Center if there is one in your area. Ponder and pray.
As you act in faith, great blessings will come into your life.
