Learn about the events that occurred on and near the Hill Cumorah in the 1820s, such as Joseph Smith Jr.'s First Vision, the visits of the angel Moroni, and the translation of the Book of Mormon.
The Hill Cumorah Visitors' Center is a great place to start your exploration of the Palmyra area. Free guided tours relate the noteworthy events that happened here during the 1820s and '30s through paintings, exhibits, and video presentations. You can also pick up information on surrounding historical sites.
At the visitors' center, you can learn about a group of people who left Jerusalem about 600 B.C. and were guided to what is now the American continent. A history of this people, written on gold plates, was deposited in the Hill Cumorah in approximately A.D. 421 by Moroni, the last survivor of his civilization. In 1827, Moroni returned as an angel and delivered the gold plates to Joseph Smith, who translated them. We now have the record as the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
Each summer the free pageant America's Witness for Christ portrays the events surrounding the Hill Cumorah. It is a testimony in drama and music that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world.
