Learn how an 1840s shoemaker used different grades of leather and wood to construct shoes and how pioneers "personalized" their shoes. Free tours are available.
In 1842, George C. Riser brought his new bride, Christiana Kull Riser, to Nauvoo to study the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their small 16 foot by 16 foot home and shop were completed in 1843, at which time George and his brother set up a shoemaker shop on the first floor. They called themselves "Riser's Cheap Boot and Shoe Manufactory."
