Imagine setting type for a weekly newspaper by hand, having to carefully place each tiny letter in a composing stick upside down and backwards. Here you can see a period printing press and learn about the time-consuming labors necessary to print material in the 1840s.
The Printing Office is an original 1840s building that has been restored. It is part of a three-building complex that consists of the John Taylor Home, the Post Office, and the Printing Office. The first floor of the Printing Office was a bookstore, served for a time as a post office, and may have housed a bookbindery. The presses were located on the second floor.
The semimonthly Times and Seasons, the weekly Nauvoo Neighbor, and other publications were regularly printed here. Free tours are available.
