Sunday Quick Clean - If your ward or branch is the last group to use the meetinghouse on Sunday, perform a quick clean following the last meeting. The quick clean prepares the meetinghouse for weekday activities and takes care of a few important needs. A Sunday quick clean includes the following:
- Empty the trash containers, especially those that have a bad odor, such as diaper containers.
- Refill paper towels and toilet paper as needed in the restrooms.
- Return hymnals to storage areas.
- Pick up paper and other trash throughout the meetinghouse.
Perform Inspections - Formal inspections are the stake physical facilities representative’s responsibility; however, you should use the same form to check the meetinghouse for proper cleaning and care. If you inspect and evaluate meetinghouse cleanliness and care regularly, you can resolve small problems before they become large and expensive problems.
Begin with Prayer - The opportunity to clean the meetinghouse is not about saving money; it is about building testimonies and showing respect to the Lord. Because the opportunity is spiritual, it is appropriate to start each cleaning with prayer. This helps members feel the Spirit, focus on why they are there, and act appropriately in the building.
Help Everyone Feel Important - Each member is important to proper meetinghouse cleaning and care. To encourage members’ continued participation, you need to show them that they are important. There are several ways to show members that their service is valued:
- Use their time wisely by having assignments ready when they arrive.
- Make sure all members have a meaningful job to do and explain why their job is important.
- Check in with members throughout the cleaning and compliment the good work they are doing.
- As they return their supplies to the closet, ask for a report on the work they did and problems they may have seen that need to be addressed.
Use Job Aids - Members may not know or remember everything they are supposed to do for their assignment. You can help them remember by providing a cleaning aid that lists the tasks they should do. You can download general cleaning cards from this site if you do not have a system in place already.
The cleaning cards list basic cleaning requirements for any meetinghouse by task type, such as glass and mirrors, rather than by area, such as the chapel. Making assignments by task type requires fewer cleaning supplies and less equipment. It also avoids making members wait for certain supplies or equipment so they can complete their assignment. You will have to decide how many people to assign to a task based on the characteristics of the meetinghouse you are cleaning. For example, if most of the floors in the meetinghouse are tile, you may want to ask 2-3 people to clean tile floors.
