Your Stay at the MTC

Mexico

We are very excited about your future arrival at the Mexico Missionary Training Center. We hope that this information will be helpful as you make your final arrival preparations.

When should I arrive at the Mexico MTC?

If you are traveling from the United States, then your flight to the Mexico City Airport will be arranged by the Missionary Travel Department. You will fly down on a Wednesday unless there is an exception due to a holiday. Church Travel will inform us when your flight is scheduled to arrive, and a member of the MTC staff will be at the airport to greet you and bring you back to the MTC. In the unlikely event that there is no one there when you arrive, please call Brother Jorge Martinez – Travel Supervisor at 044-55-5413-6457 (from a landline) 55-5413-6457 (from a cell phone) or Samuel Gallegos, phone number 55-4348-6684. If neither is available call the CCM reception desk at 52-55-4125-4125 or 52-55-4125-4126, or cell number 044-55-4777-3704 to tell us that you have arrived. Stay in the terminal building and do not accept a ride from a taxi or from other people.

If you are traveling within Mexico and live within a couple of hours of the MTC then you can make your own way to the MTC on the Tuesday morning you are scheduled to arrive. If you live in other areas of Mexico the Mexico Travel office will contact you to make travel arrangements.

May my family come to the MTC?

Families should not plan to enter the MTC buildings with their missionary and are discouraged from traveling long distances to drop off their missionary at the MTC. Families will be directed to a curbside location to drop off and briefly say goodbye to their missionary.

As such, it would be most helpful to this intake process if you would have your farewell activities with family and friends prior to your arrival at the MTC. Because the drop-off time is very short, you will have only a few brief moments for a quick farewell, and there will be no opportunity for picture taking. Thank you for your cooperation in this process.

What if I am fluent in or speak some of my mission second language?

If you are already fluent or speak some of the second language to which you have been assigned and you have not spoken to someone at the MTC, please call (801) 422-2602 and ask for the Spanish language evaluators.

What preparations are necessary before entering the MTC?

Your mission begins when you enter the missionary training center (MTC). You must complete all preparations before entering the MTC, including the purchase of all clothing and personal items. Personal time is extremely limited.

You should enter the MTC healthy, having already taken care of all health-related matters, including dental and eye exams and follow-up treatment. Complete all medical tests requested on the Missionary Immunization/Preventive Medication Requirements form. (You or those providing for your support must pay for pre-mission medical conditions, including dental and eye care.)

You should be set apart as a full-time missionary by your stake president, receive your patriarchal blessing (if a patriarch is available in your stake), and, if you desire, receive a father's blessing before your arrival at the MTC. You are encouraged to bring a copy of your patriarchal blessing with you.

What should I bring to the MTC?

Bring the following when you come to the MTC:

  • Items on the mission clothing list sent from the Missionary Department
  • Warm clothes if your stay in the MTC is between November and February  (sweater and/or jacket)
  • An umbrella in your carry-on luggage if your stay is between April and October
  • A copy of your completed Missionary Immunization/Preventive Medication Requirements form that you can access upon arriving at the MTC
  • Personal toiletries (soap and shampoo, towel, bath sponge, tooth brush and tooth paste, sandals or flip flops to get to the bathroom and showers, shaving equipment, etc.)
  • Current temple recommend (signed and activated by your church leader)
  • Appropriate exercise clothing (five gym periods per week)
  • Your scriptures and copy of Preach My Gospel
  • Money for personal items, preferably on a debit card (see “How will my expenses be handled?”)
  • Government-issued photo ID (such as, driver's license, passport, military ID, and so on). This ID is required by airport authorities.

Please put your name on all clothing, luggage, and other belongings.

Where should I report?

Report to the missionary training center dressed in missionary attire with a proper missionary haircut. If you are flying to Mexico an MTC staff member will pick you up.

The address of the MTC is:
Carr. Tenayuca-chalmita 828
Col. Zona Escolar
Del. Gustavo A. Madero
C.P. 07230, Distrito Federal
Mexico

The same day that you arrive at the MTC you will send a brief e-mail to your family to let them know that you arrived safely.

How should I be dressed for my arrival?

Regular missionary attire is the standard for dress at the MTC. Elders should be sure to wear a suit coat on the day of their arrival. For more information on missionary dress and grooming, please refer to your call packet or see dress and grooming guidelines.

What supplies and services will the MTC provide?

All bedding supplies, meals, and laundry facilities are provided. Personal hygiene items, laundry detergent, study materials and other related items can be purchased in the MTC bookstore.

How will my expenses be handled?

You do not need to bring money to the MTC for room and board, language and training materials, haircuts. However, you must provide your own spending money for miscellaneous expenses, such as stamps, snacks, and so on. We do not have facilities at the MTC to exchange large amounts of currency. You should exchange your money before traveling to the MTC.

Stamps cannot be purchased at the MTC, but we do have alternative facilities for sending mail. The MTC does not have an automatic stamp teller machine.

May I have visitors at the MTC?

Your training schedule will not allow time for visits from family or friends. Please advise your family not to request visits, because such visits would distract you and your companion from your training. Please do not meet your family or friends at the temple at any time. Church leaders have also asked that missionaries not be excused from the MTC to attend funerals, marriages, farewells, baptisms, or other family events. While you are at the MTC, all communications with family and others should be limited to weekly letters and/or weekly family e-mails.

Will I be able to receive packages and mail while at the MTC?

You may receive normal mail while at the MTC. Delivery time varies but using the pouch system usually takes 7 to 10 days. The pouch address is:

Name of the Missionary
Mexico MTC
P.O. Box 30150
Salt Lake City, UT 84130-0150

We discourage the sending of packages because there are often high taxes and customs costs associated with these packages when they arrive. Also we cannot guarantee that they will make it through customs. Often Customs requires that the missionary come to the Customs Office in order to receive the package and we do not have the resources to do this. Do not send medically related items through the mail as they will not be allowed through customs.

In spite of this if you decide to send a package ensure all necessary forms have been filled out beforehand and pay all customs and taxes on your end with the carrier (DHL, UPS, Fed Ex, USPS, etcetera).  If you have family members living close to the CCM, they can leave packages at the security gate Monday through Thursday or Friday until noon.

The address of the MTC is:

Name of the Missionary
Departure Date/District# (the missionary will e-mail this information home upon arrival)
Carr. Tenayuca-chalmita 828
Col. Zona Escolar
Del. Gustavo A. Madero
C.P. 07230 Mexico, Distrito Federal
Mexico

May my family deliver packages to the MTC?

Any packages or letters for missionaries must be sent through the postal service or other commercial carriers. The MTC cannot accept packages or other items delivered any other way. Mail to you should be addressed with your full name and mission assignment.

Is it possible to receive immunizations at the MTC?

You should receive all required immunizations before entering the MTC. However, you will be able to receive required immunizations at the MTC if necessary, at the cost the MTC can purchase the immunizations.

What about travel from the MTC to the mission field?

If returning to the United States then your return flight is booked with your flight to the Mexico MTC and you will already have the itinerary. An MTC staff member will accompany you to the airport on your departure day.

For those not going back to the US, the Church Travel Department will handle arrangements for your travel to the field. They will also give you official passport and visa instructions. You must follow these instructions carefully. You may be requested to send certain documents required for a visa. If you do not submit these documents by the requested date, your departure to the field may be delayed. Your departure may also be delayed because visas to certain countries are difficult to obtain.
