Frequently Asked Questions for U.S. and Canadian Residents

Passport Book

Your passport book cannot expire within 6 months of your release date. If it will, you must renew your passport before applying for any visas. Please pay the extra fees to expedite the renewal of the passport. Expediting times can take from 4–8 weeks to process.

Please send your passport book to the Travel Office. All of the consulates require it to place the visas in them.

A color photocopy of the passport ID page is required. Please send both the passport book and the photocopy.

What if missionaries don't sign their middle name on their passport?

Missionaries should leave their signature as signed on the passport.

Can I travel internationally before going to the MTC?

Please do not schedule any international travel within 60 days of your MTC date. This includes travel to Canada or Mexico and any cruises that are outside of the United States. This applies to all missionaries called to serve in Portugal, including senior couples/senior sisters.

Online Visa Application: Missionaries can only apply within 90 days of their entry date into Portugal—not before.

Missionaries must follow the detailed instructions as written. All of the answers to the online visa application are provided in the instructions. If missionaries notice the online application to be different than what is given on the instructions, they should call Missionary Travel at 800-537-3537. If missionaries experience computer problems in completing the application, they should simply exit the current application and start the process over again.

Once you receive a submission acknowledgement, please do not forget to print the visa application. This is a critical step to successfully completing your visa requirements.

Why can’t missionaries put the photo in the photo box on the visa application?

The consulate requires that missionaries do not put the photo on the photo box. The photo box is where the person at the consulate places the picture after Missionary Travel sends them the application. Please make a photocopy of the first page of the visa application with the photo in the top-left corner as instructed on the visa instruction sheet.

If missionaries have an arrest record on their FBI report, what should they do?

Missionaries should call Missionary Travel (800)-537-3537 immediately.

Do missionaries need to appear at the consulate in person?

Depending on where you live, you may be required to appear in person at the consulate. Church Travel will contact you if you are required to do so. The Church will pay for this same-day roundtrip visit. Please make yourself available on the day and time we make your appointment to travel to the consulate, as there are limited days and times when you can appear at the consulate.

If missionaries already speak Portuguese, can they go to their mission early?

Language teams at the missionary training center will assess missionaries' proficiency in Portuguese.

Missionaries cannot go to Portugal until their visa is in their passport. This is approximately 30 to 45 days after submission of your visa to the consulate.

If missionaries have both a U.S. passport and a Brazilian passport, do they need a visa?

Yes, they do. Missionaries apply for the Portugal visa with their U.S. passport only.

Can missionaries enter Portugal with just their Brazilian passport?

No, a religious visa is required to enter Portugal.

If missionaries have some of their visa documents, can they mail some now and mail the rest later?

No. Missionaries should send everything together in the provided return envelope.

If missionaries didn’t turn in their visa documents on time, will they be delayed?

Missionaries will enter the MTC as scheduled. If documents were turned in too late, you may be assigned to a temporary mission in the U.S. until your visa is processed and received.
