Another Milestone in the History of the Church has been reached here in the United Kingdom.....

This year the Portsmouth England Stake will be celebrating their 40th year as a Stake of Zion. The Southampton England Stake was organised from the England South West Mission on 11th February 1973 by Elder Boyd K Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, this was a momentous occasion for the members of that area who had worked and sacrificed over many years to build and establish Zion.

At that time the stake included branches and wards of the Church stretching from Weymouth in the West to Havant in the east.

Reginald V Littlecott (seated centre) was called at the age of 33 to serve as the first stake president, with Presidents Peter J Crockford (left) and Leonard Eden (right) as his counsellors.

Just nine years later in May 1982, the Southampton stake was split to create the Poole England Stake with President Crockford, who had served since 1978 as the Stake President in Southampton stake becoming the president of the Poole Stake. In the meantime President Eden became the first president of the Plymouth England Stake in 1977.

In 1990 with the completion of the stake building in Portsmouth, the name of the stake was changed from Southampton England to Portsmouth England Stake.

The history of the Church in the Southampton/Portsmouth area extends long before the creation of the stake in 1973. Before Districts and Stakes were formed the church established what were called Conferences which were in fact a geographical area. Southampton was a Conference and covered an area similar in size to the present stake boundaries, including the Portsmouth area and benefitted from traveling Elders.  The Southampton branch was organised on April 6th 1848.

This picture below is of the Portsmouth Branch in 1911.
