The Church History Museum announced today the opening of a new art exhibit on womanhood titled Practicing Charity: Everyday Daughters of God. Opening on Friday, February 28, 2014, this seven-month exhibition features the works of three Latter-day Saint artists: Lee Bennion, Brian Kershisnik, and Kathy Peterson.
The three artists featured in this exhibition were selected because of their special portrayal of women as authentic, noble, everyday daughters of God. “These paintings depict the divine nature of women while simultaneously celebrating the importance of their everyday lives,” said Laura Hurtado, curator for the exhibit.
“Practicing charity is something we as women of God do every day,” added Hurtado. “We practice our religion as one practices a musical instrument. We practice being friends, neighbors, and Christians.”
This exhibit also celebrates LDS Young Women values. “These values inform young women of the everyday practice of eternal principles,” said Hurtado. “Women of all ages recognize that in everyday tasks, we can come to know who we are and who we can become, encouraging us to faithfully practice charity each day.”
This exhibit will appeal to individuals, families, and members of organized Church groups, such as the Relief Society, Young Women, and Primary. Museum docents will supply materials for Young Women to work on Personal Progress value experiences and for Primary girls to fulfill requirements for their Faith in God awards.
The exhibit will be available to view and share online at history.lds.org under Current Exhibits. On this site, the artists will share their ideas on individual pieces included in the online exhibit. These ideas will also be featured on the museum's multimedia panels located at the entrance to the museum.
The Church History Museum is located at 45 N. West Temple in downtown Salt Lake City.
