On August 23, 2011, the Church Educational System will kick off its annual series of BeSmart firesides. The meetings inform prospective college students in the United States about the purpose of gaining a higher education.
The firesides and the website BeSmart.com are dedicated to preparing youth for college and beyond, offering advice about college preparation and information on institute and Church schools.
The 16 days of interactive and informative meetings will come to meetinghouses in 14 states. Each meeting lasts 75 minutes.
The locations of these annual firesides are changed each year to give more students the opportunity to attend.
“It’s not just for youth,” said Kirk Strong, director of high school and college relations at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, USA. “It also provides valuable information for youth leaders and parents of youth.”
BeSmart is built on the foundation of President Gordon B. Hinckley’s (1910–2008) Six B’s, which he presented during a fireside in 2000 (see “A Prophet’s Counsel and Prayer for Youth,” Liahona, April 2001, 30; Ensign, January 2001, 2).
“You belong to a church that teaches the importance of education,” he said. “… [The Lord] wants you to train your minds and hands to become an influence for good as you go forward with your lives. And as you do so and as you perform honorably and with excellence, you will bring honor to the Church, for you will be regarded as a man or woman of integrity and ability and conscientious workmanship.“
