The Church History Library will host the Men and Women of Faith lecture “Mary Fielding Smith: Daughter, Woman of Faith, Mother” on Thursday, April 10, at 7:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall. The presenter will be Audrey M. Godfrey. This event is free and open to the public.
Audrey M. Godfrey holds a master’s degree in history from Utah State University and is the coauthor of Women's Voices, Our Heritage, and the history of the Church Educational System and is a contributor to history encyclopedias. Godfrey claims that there is much to learn from Mary Fielding Smith, mother of the former prophet Joseph Fielding Smith. “Mary Fielding Smith's life, though lived in the 19th century, provides many lessons on how to live in the modern world.”
This lecture will highlight faithful moments in Mary Fielding Smith’s lifetime that exemplify living the gospel and finding happiness. Godfrey tells a story from Smith’s life: “As she became a second wife and a stepmother, we see how she navigated new relationships and found her own place in the family. We learn from her mistakes what it means to love family members and help them be happy.”
Godfrey believes Smith’s greatest legacy she left for her children was that “she taught them about the gospel and how to take care of themselves and help others.” Her life was built around charitable acts and a strong work ethic, which provided a fruitful life.
This event is part of the 2014 Men and Women of Faith lecture series sponsored by the Church History Library. Lectures are held the second Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square, 50 North West Temple. Validated parking is available at the Conference Center.
