The Church History Library will host the Men and Women of Faith lecture “Faith to Persevere: The Southern States Mission, 1875–1898” on Thursday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall. The speaker is Heather Seferovich. This event is free and open to the public.

In the 19th century, the Southern States Mission was the Church’s largest domestic mission and an important training ground for future leaders. Missionaries serving in the South were treated with kindness, indifference, and brutality, each in varying degrees. The American South was both a hospitable and a hostile host to Latter-day Saint missionaries.

Heather Seferovich earned a B.A. in American history and an M.A. in American social history from Brigham Young University (BYU). She has worked as a coordinator of public programs, a lecturer for museum practices classes, a book editor at BYU Studies, and most recently an exhibit curator at BYU. Seferovich has written encyclopedia articles, textbook modules, book chapters, and academic histories. Additionally, she has edited over 70 Mormon history books along with a dozen journal articles and book reviews. Her research is focused on LDS Church history, southern U.S. history, Native American history, and education history.

This event is part of the 2013 Men and Women of Faith lecture series sponsored by the Church History Library and will be the last lecture in the series. 2014 lectures will start next February and will be held the second Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square, 50 North West Temple. Validated parking is available at the Conference Center. As you enter the Conference Center parking, inform the attendant that you are going to a lecture and ask for a token to use when you exit.
