Offering the first address of the Sunday morning session of the 186th Annual General Conference, President Thomas S. Monson announced that the Church will build new temples in Quito, Ecuador; Harare, Zimbabwe; Belém, Brazil; and a second temple in Lima, Peru.

“When I became a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1963, there were 12 operating temples in the entire Church,” said President Monson. “With the dedication of the Provo City Center Temple two weeks ago, there are now 150 temples in operation throughout the world. How grateful we are for the blessings we receive in these holy houses.”

President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, conducted the session, during which Elder Anthony D. Perkins, a General Authority Seventy, and Sister Carol F. McConkie of the Young Women general presidency offered the prayers.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf speaks during the 186th Annual General Conference of the Church in Salt Lake City at the Conference Center Sunday, April 3, 2016.

The Tabernacle Choir, under the direction of Mack Wilberg and Ryan Murphy, with Richard Elliott and Andrew Unsworth on the organ, provided music for the session.

During his address President Monson said he has been thinking recently about choices.

“It has been said that the door of history turns on small hinges, and so do people’s lives,” he said. “The choices we make determine our destiny.”
