The Church has announced the groundbreaking ceremony for the Fort Collins Colorado Temple to be held on Saturday, August 24, at 10:00 a.m. The temple site is located on the southeast corner of the intersection at Trilby Road and Timberline Road, across the street from an LDS meetinghouse in Fort Collins.
Attendance at the ceremony will be by invitation only; however, proceedings of the groundbreaking will be broadcast by satellite to LDS stake centers in the temple district to accommodate those who wish to attend.
Plans to construct the Fort Collins Colorado Temple were announced by President Thomas S. Monson during general conference on April 2, 2011. It will be the second temple in Colorado. The Denver Colorado Temple, located 60 miles to the south, was dedicated in 1986.
According to the 2013 Church Almanac, the San Luis Stake, the first in Colorado, was organized in June 1883. In 1896, Apostle John W. Taylor traveled to Denver and officially established the Colorado Mission, which at the time included only Colorado. By 1907, the mission had grown to include several neighboring states and was renamed the Western States Mission. Approximately 145,000 Church members reside in Colorado, according to 2012 Church membership information.
Eric Adams of the local temple committee told the media that the 30,389-square-foot temple is scheduled for completion in mid-2015. Once completed and dedicated, the temple will serve members living in northern Colorado, southern Wyoming, and some areas of western Nebraska.
At the time the site announcement was made, in October 2011, Fort Collins Colorado Stake President Russell McClure said, “We feel this new temple will be a great asset not only to members of the Church in Colorado and the region but also to the people of Fort Collins, who will benefit from the peace and beauty a temple brings.”
Worldwide, there are 171 temples either in operation, under construction, or announced.
