General Authority Seventies Released during October 2016 General Conference

The First Presidency announced leadership changes during the Saturday afternoon session of the 186th Semiannual General Conference held on October 1. President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency announced the release of four General Authority Seventies and granted them emeritus status.

General Authority Seventies

Elder Daniel L. Johnson was sustained as a General Authority Seventy on April 1, 2006. At the time of his call he was serving as an Area Seventy in the Mexico North Area. In his assignment as a General Authority Seventy, Elder Johnson served as First Counselor and President of the Caribbean Area, President of the Mexico Area, a member of various committees at Church headquarters, and as an area assistant in the North America West and North America Northwest Areas. Prior to his call as a General Authority, Elder Johnson presided over the Ecuador Guayaquil North Mission from 1991 to 1994.

Elder Jairo Mazzagardi was sustained as a General Authority Seventy on April 3, 2010. His assignments as a General Authority Seventy included First and Second Counselor in the Brazil Area. Prior to his service as a General Authority, Elder Mazzagardi served as president of the São Paulo Brazil Temple and as an Area Seventy in Brazil. He presided over the Brazil Salvador Mission from 1990 to 1993.

Elder Kent F. Richards began his service as a General Authority Seventy on April 4, 2009. During his time as a General Authority, Elder Richards served as a member of many committees at Church headquarters, including as Assistant Executive Director of the Family History Department. He also served as Second Counselor in the Chile Area, Second Counselor in the Europe Area, and as Assistant Executive Director in the Temple Department. He was an area assistant in the North America West and North America Northwest Areas. He was also a member of the Temple and Family History Executive Council, and his last assignment prior to being released was as the Executive Director of the Temple Department.

Prior to his service as a General Authority, Elder Richards served as a mission president in the Texas San Antonio Mission from 1998 to 2001.

Elder Francisco J. Viñas was sustained as a General Authority Seventy on April 6, 1996. His assignments as a General Authority included service in many Area Presidencies around the world. He served as First Counselor and President in the South America North Area, First Counselor and President of the Chile Area, First Counselor in the Europe West Area, First Counselor and President in the Caribbean Area, and as Second and First Counselor in the South America South Area. Prior to his service as a General Authority, Elder Viñas served as a mission president in the Argentina Salta Mission from 1998 to 1990 and as a regional representative.

President Eyring also recognized the death of Elder Per G. Malm, who died of cancer at the age of 67, while he was serving as a General Authority Seventy.

Elder Malm was sustained on April 3, 2010, and became the first General Authority to be called from Sweden.

Elder Malm’s assignments in his calling as a General Authority included various committees at Church headquarters, Assistant Executive Director of the Church’s Curriculum Department, Second Counselor in the Europe East Area, Assistant Executive Director of the Missionary Department, and Assistant Executive Director of the Correlation Department.

Prior to his call as a General Authority Seventy, Elder Malm served as an Area Seventy, as mission president in the Norway Oslo Mission from 2002 to 2006, and as the public affairs director for Sweden.

Elder Malm and his wife, Ingrid Agneta Karlsson Malm, were married on October 8, 1969, and together they have eight children and many grandchildren.

Area Seventies

Two new Area Seventies were announced: Bhanu K. Hiranandani, 40, South America Northwest Area, and Sandino Roman, 42, Mexico Area. Alan R. Walker, 45, serving in the Mexico Area, was released.
