The First Presidency has announced the date for the groundbreaking of the Rio de Janeiro Brazil Temple will be Saturday, March 4, 2017, at 10:00 a.m.

Elder Claudio R. M. Costa, Brazil Area President, will preside at the event, which will include other Church leaders and invited guests from the community. The groundbreaking marks the beginning of construction.

There are currently 155 temples in operation throughout the world. The Rio de Janeiro Temple was announced by President Thomas S. Monson in April 2013, the eighth in Brazil. Other temples in Brazil are located in Campinas, Curitiba, Fortaleza, São Paulo, Porto Alegre, and Recife. A new temple was announced last spring for Belém, Brazil.

Latter-day Saint temples differ from the meetinghouses or chapels where members meet for Sunday worship services. Temples are considered “houses of the Lord,” where the teachings of Jesus Christ are reaffirmed through marriage, baptism, and other ceremonies that unite families for eternity.

The Rio de Janeiro Temple is located at Avenida das Américas, #8,400, in Barra da Tijuca.
