Staff of the Church History Department are looking for original records relating to the Hawn’s Mill Massacre and Far West burial grounds, including diary or journal entries, letters, newspaper accounts, photographs, and reminiscences.

This year marks the 175th anniversary of the Hawn’s Mill Massacre and the 1838 expulsion of the Latter-day Saints from Missouri. A mob attacked a group of Latter-day Saints in October 1838, killing 17 men and boys. The Church recently acquired both Hawn’s Mill and the Far West burial ground sites. A few hundred Saints, including Apostle David W. Patten, were buried in Far West between 1836 and 1838. Both locations are in Caldwell County, Missouri.

Anyone with information pertaining to the location of such records is requested to contact Benjamin Pykles at pykles@ldschurch.org or 1-801-240-3588.
