Choosing a career can be hard, and your choices may be limited to careers you’ve been exposed to. But it’s important to do your research so you find the right career fit for you, even if it’s not what you anticipated.
Choosing the playlist perfect for you
The How-To channel has videos and playlists to help children, teenagers, and young adults try on a career and discover the possibilities in various careers and fields.
There are four playlists and six videos that are part of the “Try on a Career” series. The videos are introductions to help contextualize the playlists.
First watch “How to Try on a New Career” to preview the series, and then watch the video geared toward the audience and age-group that fits your situation to help you understand the questions you should answer as you watch the playlists.
The four playlist options are for children ages 8 to 12, teens ages 13 to 18, young adults, and parents wanting to help their children answer the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Each playlist contains videos highlighting different jobs and careers. The older the audience, the longer and more detailed the videos.
Helping children explore career choices
“It’s hard to know what you can do when you don’t even know what you want to do,” says the man in “How to Help Your Kids Try On a Career.” There are seemingly endless possibilities when it comes to careers and jobs, so it can be overwhelming when you or other adults ask children what they want to be when they grow up.
Don’t pressure them, but see the “Try on a Career” series as a way to expose your children to different jobs and help them discover skills that could help them build interest in different types of careers.
Kids don’t need to have their careers planned right now. It takes time and effort to find out what you’re good at and what you want to do for a career or job. As they grow up, those ideas should become more solidified, especially when they’re old enough to seek further training or education that will help them to become independent. Being patient and helping your children research different careers are some of the best ways you can help them figure out what they want to be when they grow up.

Think about costs for training and how much demand there is for certain jobs in your area. Get out and talk with others in similar fields. Be patient because it will take time and perhaps be frustrating, but move forward and seek out learning and education—whether formal or informal. Challenge yourself and see whether you are a good match for your career interests.
