Mission President Shot in Legs
President Lynn Richard Madsen, 55, of the Mexico Oaxaca Mission, is recovering after he was shot in the legs September 7 during an armed robbery at a Subway restaurant in the city of Juchitan de Zaragoza.
President Madsen is under medical care, according to a Church spokesman.
“President Madsen sustained injuries to both legs from a single gunshot,” Eric Hawkins said. “Fortunately, his wounds are not serious in nature. He is receiving medical treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.”
He is being treated at a local hospital, his daughter wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday afternoon, September 8.
A report published by a Mexican news outlet said President Madsen was with three missionaries at the restaurant when two males between the ages of 16 and 18 approached the building. In the ensuing confrontation, a bullet struck President Madsen.
President Madsen and his wife, Sister Diane Mathis Madsen, began their service in July 2014. Before leaving for Mexico, the couple was living in the Orem Utah Stonewood Stake.
