Missionary Dies in Madagascar

  • 16 July 2014

Elder Matthew Palmer, 19, a missionary serving in the Madagascar Antananarivo Mission from Woods Cross, Utah, died June 26, 2014, from a condition his family described as similar to a brain aneurysm.

Elder Palmer, who, his family said, always wanted to serve a mission for the Church, began feeling headaches more than a month ago and received medical treatment in Madagascar. The headaches persisted, scans followed, and he was flown from the island nation to Union Hospital near Johannesburg, South Africa. While he was there, doctors discovered internal bleeding in his brain, his family said.

His parents flew from Utah to Johannesburg and were with their son when he died. The family agreed to donate his organs, a decision doctors in South Africa told the family would help as many as 80 adults and children, all in Africa.
