The Media Library on LDS.org now has interactive transcripts available for all captioned videos on the site.

“The interactive transcripts improve accessibility. They appeal to visual learners who can now follow along with the written text while watching a video.”

As you prepare a lesson for family home evening, you remember a quote from a Church video that you want to include. You search for the video on LDS.org, but it doesn't come up. Where do you go from here?

The Media Library on LDS.org now has interactive transcripts available for all captioned videos on the site, which will help you find what you're looking for.

“The interactive transcripts improve accessibility,” explained Marianne Jennings, a product manager for the LDS Media Library. “For example, they appeal to visual learners who can now follow along with the written text while watching a video.”

The transcripts have several features that make the Church videos significantly easier to use and personalize, Sister Jennings said, including:

  • finding the video
  • reading along
  • navigating more quickly
  • creating and sharing customized video clips
  • downloading and printing transcripts

Finding the video

Before the transcripts were created, videos were hard to find because searching for the audio of the video would not necessarily bring up the video itself. Now, however, the full text of the videos will be searchable from external search engines like Google, Yahoo, or Bing, making them extremely easy to find.

Reading along

You can read along with what you hear in the video. As the words are spoken in the video, the text in the transcript changes from black to light gray, allowing you to follow along. You can turn this option on and off by clicking the unlock/lock button at the top right of the transcript.

The text turns from black to gray as the audio plays, allowing anyone viewing the video to read along.

Searching the text

Using the search bar in the top left corner, you can search for words within the text.

Navigating more quickly

Rather than having to memorize the specific minutes and seconds in order to play from a certain point in the video, now you can simply click on the word in the transcript and the video will begin to play at the moment when that word is spoken.

Clicking on a word advances the video to the moment when that word is spoken.

Creating and sharing customized video clips

By highlighting a section of text and clicking the word Clip at the top of the screen, you can create your own quotes or highlights from the video that you can share on Facebook, Twitter, or shareable link.

You can now create personalized highlights of videos by using the clip feature.

Downloading and printing transcripts

You can now download the transcript of the video and print it for a lesson or discussion.

The new video transcript feature is a stepping-stone to reaching members all over the world, Sister Jennings explained. “It is the starting point to begin translating transcripts and captions into additional languages, making them available to more people around the world.”
