“To memorize a scripture is to forge a new friendship. It is like discovering a new individual who can help in time of need, give inspiration and comfort, and be a source of motivation for needed change.” —Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Memorizing the word of God can bring light into your life just when you need it, and now an update to the Church’s Scripture Mastery app for Android and Apple makes it easier than ever.

“Mark important scriptures on your device and refer back to them frequently,” said Elder Richard G. Scott during his April 2013 general conference talk. If members memorized scriptures as much as they text, he explained, they would be able to remember hundreds of scriptures, which “would prove to be a powerful source of inspiration and guidance by the Holy Ghost in times of need.”

The update makes it possible to select scriptures from the Gospel Library app and import them into the Scripture Mastery app to memorize. You can select passages from any Gospel Library resource, including “The Living Christ,” “The Family: A Proclamation to the World,” Preach My Gospel, general conference addresses, and more.

Select and save a passage to memorize

Follow these simple steps to create a custom passage to memorize:

1. Ensure the Gospel Library and Scripture Mastery apps are loaded onto your device.

2. Open the Gospel Library app.

3. Highlight the passage, verse, or quote you want to memorize.

4. Click “share” to import the selection to the Scripture Mastery app.

5. Edit the name of the selection and then add a hint or reminder phrase.

6. Open the Scripture Mastery app.

7. Find your selection under the category “My Scriptures.”

“The Church is pleased to provide these wonderful study tools to individuals and families to help them regularly study and ponder the word of God,” said Elder Larry R. Lawrence of the Seventy. He added, “It is inspiring to observe how the rising generation is digitally engaging with the scriptures and receiving the promised blessings of increased spiritual guidance.”

Memorization activities

The Scripture Mastery app provides three activities to help you memorize:

1. Removing Letters or Words. This activity is the most helpful for selections other than scriptures, because it focuses on memorizing the passage rather than matching it to its reference. As you review the passage, you can use a bar at the bottom of the app to slowly remove the letters or words, which helps you to rely on your memory to fill in the gaps. If you prefer to remove letters within the words, you can select the “Aa” symbol in the bottom left corner. Unselect the same symbol if you prefer to delete whole words at a time.

2. Flashcards. This activity uses the hint you provided when you saved your selection. Flashcards match the hint to the reference from which it came. At the bottom right of the screen you can select whether you want the “hint” or the “verse” to be displayed on the front of the flashcards, so you can view the hint and guess the reference or vice versa.

3. Quiz. The quiz activity also involves matching the hint to its reference. The app provides you with the hint and then gives you four options to choose from. At the end, you will be provided with your score.

“Great power can come from memorizing scriptures,” taught Elder Scott. “To memorize a scripture is to forge a new friendship. It is like discovering a new individual who can help in time of need, give inspiration and comfort, and be a source of motivation for needed change.”
