- News.LDS.org has been publishing since August 2010.
- Since January 2011, News and Events has averaged one original story per day.
- New video is published about twice per week.
Church News and Events, a section of the new LDS.org, focuses on providing the latest official news for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worldwide.
At news.LDS.org, Church members find a central location for all of the Church’s official news sources. Custom, original content created by the Church News and Events team is supplemented by information the Church’s other officials sources—Church magazines, Public Affairs, Mormon Channel, and LDS Church News.
“There are only a handful of Church-related news outlets that can call themselves ‘official,’” said Lee Gibbons, director of LDS.org. “Our effort in serving the worldwide Church is to bring all of those sources together here in the context of a global website that will be available in multiple languages.”
As a section of the Church’s official LDS.org website, news.LDS.org brings members articles on new products, Church events, up-to-date humanitarian aid reports, member-experience stories, and much more. And with its connection to Church magazines, particularly the Liahona, the information on Church News and Events will soon come from and be available to members around the globe in nearly 50 languages.
Church News and Events helps give members around the world a closer look at various aspects of the Church, such as welfare efforts, emergency response in Japan, efforts to preserve historical documents, and what happens behind the scenes at general conference.
Working closely with LDS.org’s Prophets and Apostles Speak Today section, Church News and Events reports on the work and ministry of Church leaders, including recently, Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Yoshihiko Kikuchi of the Seventy, and Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president.
News.LDS.org also highlights new products—among them the Church History Visual Resources DVDs —and inspirational stories like the 120-mile trek young single adults in Papua New Guinea made to attend a regional conference.
Many stories feature videos and photo galleries to enrich the reader’s experience.
News.LDS.org is updated throughout the week with new events, articles, and multimedia. In addition to providing original news and features, Church News and Events helps visitors find the latest information from other sources providing official Church news, including Church Public Affairs, the Church magazines, the Mormon Channel radio station, and LDS Church News.
News.LDS.org has several functions to help readers find what they want, and once they do, they can share relevant and inspiring information they find with the site’s sharing capabilities—e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, and Delicious.
The “Global Church Events” list on the right side of the front page keeps readers informed about upcoming Church events, including trainings, conferences, concerts, pageants, and open houses. Each listed event links to a page that provides event details such as ticket information and driving directions.
Meanwhile, the “Topics” list on news.lds.org allows visitors to sort articles by subject. Interested in articles on missionary work? The “Missionary Work” link will provide you with a list of related articles that will grow as Church News and Events add more and more content.
Church News and Events also has a general search function for those looking for a specific article.
As LDS.org becomes available in 10 additional languages (Cantonese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish) navigation on the Church News and Events website will also be translated into those 11 languages, as will original articles as resources allow.
While the news team is already making use of its international connections to provide stories in English from around the world, Church News and Events is working with the Liahona, the Church’s international magazine, to provide access to content created by members around the world.
“We will provide access to thousands of pages of content per year in up to 49 languages,” Brother Gibbons said. “Church News and Events is soon to become a global resource a global resource that helps unite and inform members of an international Church.”
News.LDS.org provides a reliable, single location where Church members can follow the activities of the Church, witness the development of the Church worldwide, and be informed and inspired by the experiences of members around the globe.
“As Church News and Events focuses on the good things going on in the Church throughout the earth, individuals and families are strengthened in their resolve and ability to learn, live, and share the gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Elder Paul B. Pieper of the Seventy.
