Are you passionate about family stories? Do you have an interest in learning how to discover your roots? If so, Family Discovery Day 2017 is for you and you can attend or watch live from anywhere in the world.


RootsTech Family Discovery Day is a 1-day free event designed to help LDS individuals and families discover and celebrate their family heritage—past, present, and future. Family Discovery Day, which originates at the RootsTech family history conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, will be streamed online in English, Spanish, and Portuguese so that members of the Church around the world can participate.

Here’s what you can expect this year:

General Authority speakers

President Russell M. Nelson, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and his wife, Sister Wendy Watson Nelson, will be the featured speakers at Family Discovery Day.

President and Sister Nelson will share family stories and experiences that highlight the importance of family and offer unique perspectives for raising children and grandchildren in faith.

The Family Discovery Day general session with President and Sister Nelson will begin at 1:00 p.m. mountain standard time on February 11, 2017, and will be streamed live on the home page of ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

Other special guests

Family Discovery Day will also feature popular LDS speakers including former National Football League player and current television personality Vai Sikahema; Brigham Young University head football coach Kalani Sitake; BYU professor of religion and popular public speaker Hank Smith; and Deseret Book CEO Sheri Dew.

Attending the live event

More than 15,000 adults and children attended the free event in 2016. Tickets will be limited in 2017 for this increasingly popular event. Individuals and families interested in attending the live event Saturday, February 11, in Salt Lake City should register as quickly as possible online at RootsTech.org.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square perform Thursday, February 9, at 8 p.m. in the Conference Center. Titled “Music—It Runs in the Family,” it is being billed as “an evening filled with Rodgers and Hammerstein music and stories.” The event will be narrated by Oscar “Andy” Hammerstein III, grandson of Oscar Hammerstein II, half of the legendary songwriting team. Special guest artist Dallyn Vail Bayles will also perform. Obtain free tickets online at ChurchofJesusChrist.org/events. On Saturday, February 11, portions of the concert will be available to watch on demand from the ChurchofJesusChrist.org home page following the Family Discover Day live sessions.

For those who can attend live at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, sign up for a time to meet one-on-one with a certified FamilySearch ambassador and find names of your ancestors to take to the temple. Space is limited.

If you have a family history calling, take advantage of specialized training in Salt Lake City built to help you learn how to organize family history efforts, work with youth consultants, and take advantage of new tools and techniques. You’ll leave with tips and tricks to help individuals discover and connect their families. Register to attend here.
