In a private ceremony surrounded by family and friends, David Hanneman of Laie, Hawaii, was officially awarded credentials as Ambassador of Spiritual Wellness and Honorary Chaplain by the World Spiritual Health Organization, which recognized Brother Hanneman for his lifetime of service and hospitality to people from diverse cultures and faith traditions.
During the ceremony LDS Chaplain (Col.) Mark L. Allison noted a recent experience he had while visiting with a veteran in the VA Hospital in Salt Lake City. The veteran shared a story about how during the 1960s he was on a work detail in Laie at the newly built Polynesian Cultural Center. By the end of a long day, this veteran realized he would need one more day to finish his work, but he had nowhere to sleep for the night. Upon hearing this, Brother Hanneman went to him and said, “You come home with me. We have room in my house where you can sleep tonight.”
As a founding member of the Polynesian Cultural Center, Brother Hanneman has been an ambassador of goodwill to countless students and people from around the world. He has also served as a sealer in the Laie Hawaii Temple, as a patriarch, and in a stake presidency and has exemplified the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ while abundantly sharing the aloha spirit of love and hospitality.
