In May an academic symposium celebrating 400 years of the King James Version of the Bible was held at Oxford University in England. Bible scholars discussed the historical text alongside Elder Kenneth Johnson, an emeritus member of the Seventy.
Harris Manchester College and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints jointly organized the prestigious event, which included addresses by several Bible experts and religious leaders as well as tours of historic Bible exhibitions.
Several speakers touched on the influence of the King James Version’s translation on the English-speaking world. One literary expert coupled its influence on the language with that of William Shakespeare’s works.
Elder Johnson testified of the Bible’s power. “The Bible bears witness of Jesus Christ as the Son of God. … The book is a conduit to inspiration and revelation,” he said.
John S. Tanner, Academic Vice President at Brigham Young University, discussed the Bible’s effect on American culture.
This celebration of the historic text’s impact on literature, culture, and religion is just one of hundreds of events organized around the world during this, the 400th year of the publication of the King James Version of the Bible.
