Members Safe After Flooding in Argentina

Local Church leaders are working with civil authorities and other community organizations to offer assistance after flooding in Argentina caused at least 52 deaths and damaged homes and church buildings.

LA PLATA, ARGENTINA
Many Church members lost their homes in La Plata, Argentina, during the early hours of Tuesday, April 2, when a record-breaking storm inundated the area with more than 10 inches of rain in just a few hours. Water levels quickly rose, flooding many neighborhoods and low-lying areas and causing at least 52 deaths. Several people drowned after being trapped in their cars or while walking along city streets as the water quickly rose. The same storm killed at least five people in Buenos Aires.
The rains also flooded the country’s largest oil refinery, causing a fire that took hours to extinguish.
All missionaries and members were reported safe after the storm, according to a Church welfare report.
Damage was reported to several member homes in the Buenos Aires North stake, Buenos Aires Liniers stake, Buenos Aires Litoral stake, Buenos Aires Gonzalez Catan stake, La Plata stake and La Plata East stake. At least one Church building sustained damage.
Local Church leaders are providing assistance to members. Thousands of people in the area were left without power and more than 2,200 were evacuated. The government declared three days of national mourning after what it called “an unprecedented catastrophe.”
