New CD Features Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Bryn Terfel
Deutsche Grammophon has released Homeward Bound, a new album featuring Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and the Orchestra at Temple Square.
The collaboration reunites Terfel with the choir a decade after his first appearance at its annual Christmas concert. Terfel also teams up with mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford and Norwegian soprano Sissel, another past Christmas concert guest artist.
Terfel, a four-time Grammy Award winner, most recently for his performance in the Metropolitan Opera’s Ring cycle, is scheduled to perform at the San Francisco Opera throughout the month of October.
The CD features an Americana repertoire that also reflects the shared Welsh heritage of Terfel and many founding members of the choir who were Welsh immigrants to Utah. Material ranges from British and American folk and popular songs to hymns, spirituals, and classical pieces. It includes new interpretations of favorites such as “What a Wonderful World,” “Shenandoah,” “Home on the Range,” and “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In,” as well as the African American spiritual “Deep River” and the 19th-century hymn “How Great Thou Art,” all under the direction of music director Mack Wilberg.
