Tropical Storm in Philippines Triggers Landslide
During the early hours of Saturday, December 17, while people were still asleep, Tropical Storm Washi hit the southern Philippines island of Mindanao, dumping large amounts of rain and triggering flooding and landslides that caused widespread destruction and the death of at least 680 individuals, including seven members of the Church.
All missionaries are safe, but official government reports list more than 800 more people—including five members of the Church—missing nearly three days after the most devastating cyclone to hit the Philippines in the past two years. The government reports that flooding from the storm affected nearly 150,000 people—45,000 of whom are staying in evacuation centers.
