Salvation Army Lauds Partnership with Church to Help Needy

The Church’s ongoing relationship with the Salvation Army was recognized at the charity’s 2013 Donor and Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on May 8, 2013, at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.
Elder Robert K. Dellenbach, the Church’s liaison to the Salvation Army (Utah chapter), was presented with the Advisory Board Member of the Year Award. Elder Dellenbach was called by President Thomas S. Monson to represent the Church on the board after he was made an emeritus General Authority in October 2007. He had previously served as the Young Men general president from 1998 to 2001.
Elder Dellenbach was among several individuals who were recognized by the Salvation Army.
“There are people in society who need our help,” Elder Dellenbach remembered President Monson saying when he was called to the advisory board.
Among the efforts the Church has made to assist the Salvation Army was the donation of a Salt Lake City-area meetinghouse in 1988. Elder Dellenbach said the Salvation Army is planning to expand that facility and the Church will be providing personnel assistance with the project.
In a Church News interview, Elder Dellenbach said much of his motivation to serve in this capacity was reflected in a talk given by Elder Robert C. Gay of the Seventy in the October 2012 general conference, in which he admonished members to rescue “the lost, the last, and the least.”
The award presented to Elder Dellenbach is given to an advisory board member who “gives selflessly time, energy, and support to benefit the mission of the Salvation Army.”
The Salvation Army—“an evangelical part of the universal Christian church”—was created in 1865. More than 30 million Americans receive some form of assistance from the organization annually. The mission of the organization is to “preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.”
