Special Multistake Youth Conference
By Sister Marge Clayton
Youth from several Gauteng, South Africa, stakes will gather in December 2013 at Konka (near Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa) to participate in the first-ever “Special Multistake Youth Conference” (SMYC) held in Africa. These youth conferences are held internationally under the direction of Area Presidencies. “Stand Ye in Holy Places, and Be Not Moved” (Doctrine and Covenants 87:8) is the theme of the conference, which will include a carefully balanced 5-day program of classes and activities for youth ages 14-18. Emphasis of this program is to become spiritually self-reliant.
Five-hundred youth will participate along with 70 YSAs, who will serve as Building Counselors and Counselors. The Young Single Adult Coordinators are Brother Craig Keyes and Sister Abena Danso with Brother Laurence and Sister Danila Jordan serving as the Session Directing Couple.
The main objective of SMYC is to provide a climate of revelation where the Youth and Young Single Adult leaders can be strengthened in their efforts to come unto Christ. Each class, activity, and other opportunity works to accomplish that objective. SMYC is not merely entertainment, but it is a fun way to learn how to strengthen home and family, follow the Prophet and Apostles, and serve others. Youth will learn the importance of attending Church meetings, Seminary, and Institute. They are taught in Morningsides, Devotionals, Classes, and Firesides each day using the scriptures, General Conference talks, and other Church curriculum. There will be games, dances, a talent show, and a musical program. Youth are expected to keep Church standards while at the conference.
It is hoped that in years ahead, all the youth will be able to participate in a Special Multistake Youth Conference.
